Part of the RCM's coloured wildlife quarter series, this issue used a dry-transfer colour application process that the mint had been refining since its first coloured coin in 1999 — a poppy quarter that caused immediate controversy when the U.S. Army warned soldiers it might be a surveillance device. The Wood Duck issue arrived as the series was well past its novelty peak, aimed squarely at the collector market with no genuine circulation intent.
