Canada's women's ice hockey program had, by 2009, accumulated four consecutive world championship titles and back-to-back Olympic golds from Salt Lake City and Turin. The RCM issued this colored circulation-intended piece as part of its ongoing Olympic and Paralympic series ahead of the 2010 Vancouver Games — one of several quarters released in the run-up to the home games. The color application was done at the mint level, a process the RCM had been refining since its first colored quarter in 2004.
