The Calgary Stampeders won their first Grey Cup in 1948, a game remembered as much for the fans who rode horses through the lobby of the Royal York Hotel in Toronto as for the result on the field. That incident became one of the most retold stories in Canadian football folklore, and the franchise has leaned into its western identity ever since. This coin is one in a series of fourteen issued by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2012 to mark the 100th Grey Cup championship.
