The 2015 Canadian quarter marks the 50th anniversary of the Maple Leaf flag, adopted on February 15, 1965 after one of the most contentious parliamentary debates in Canadian history — a six-week filibuster by Conservative MPs loyal to the Red Ensign that Prime Minister Pearson ultimately broke by invoking closure. The flag question had divided the country sharply along anglophone and francophone lines for decades before the vote finally passed.
KM#1851.2 distinguishes itself from the base circulation strike by its three-ply nickel finish, a plating specification introduced by the Royal Canadian Mint to improve vending machine acceptance rates while reducing production costs relative to pure nickel blanks.
