| 表面の説明 | Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II as rendered by Susanna Blunt, depicting the monarch at approximately 77 years of age, bareheaded, and wearing a necklace and earrings. The legend 'ELIZABETH II D•G•REGINA' arcs across the upper field, identifying her as Queen by the grace of God. The portrait is rendered in fine relief against a flat field, in the refined style characteristic of Canadian circulation coinage of the period. |

Issued to mark the centennial of the Canadian Arctic Expedition of 1913–1918, one of the most ambitious and catastrophic scientific ventures in Canadian history. Led by Vilhjalmur Stefansson, the expedition split into two parties; the northern group's ship, the Karluk, became icebound and was eventually crushed, stranding its crew on the Arctic ice. Eleven of the twenty-five aboard died before rescue.
Stefansson himself had left the ship days earlier, ostensibly to hunt — a decision that haunted his reputation for the rest of his life.
