Bermuda's decimal coinage was introduced in 1970 when the island switched from pounds to dollars at par with the US dollar, and this KM#32 type has run with minimal interruption since. The coat of arms reverse was a deliberate nod to colonial continuity — Bermuda retained the shield design at a moment when many Caribbean and Atlantic territories were either seeking independence or actively distancing themselves from British heraldic conventions.
