Part of the RCM's ongoing Wildlife series, this issue was released alongside a broader push by the mint to reintroduce natural history subjects to circulation-format coinage after decades of dominance by commemorative precious-metal programs. The Barn Owl does not breed in most of Canada — its range barely touches southern British Columbia and Ontario — making the choice slightly unusual for a series nominally celebrating Canadian wildlife.
