Beschrijving keerzijde Central sunken cartouche displays a stylised, primitively rendered human figure in full length, evoking the crude engraving style of early colonial-era Australian dump coinage. This raised inner disk is set against a deeply recessed annular field bearing the circular legend QUARTER OZ· THE DUMP· 999 SILVER, with the date 1989 appearing at the base. The entire composition is framed by an inner and outer bead border, reflecting the historical reference to the holed Spanish silver dollar dumps used in early New South Wales. The reverse was designed by Stuart Devlin.

Aanvullende informatie

The "Dump" design revives the name given to the small silver disc punched from the centre of Spanish colonial eight-real pieces during the 1813 currency crisis in New South Wales — an emergency measure by Governor Macquarie when the colony faced a chronic coin shortage. The original dumps were counterstamped and given a face value of fifteen pence. This 1989 issue belongs to the RAM's ongoing program of releasing legal-tender silver coins in the original dump's approximate dimensions.
