The entire composition is framed by an inner and outer bead border, reflecting the historical reference to the holed Spanish silver dollar dumps used in early New South Wales. The "Dump" design revives the name given to the small silver disc punched from the centre of Spanish colonial eight-real pieces during the 1813 currency crisis in New South Wales — an emergency measure by Governor Macquarie when the colony faced a chronic coin shortage. The original dumps were counterstamped and given a face value of fifteen pence. This 1989 issue belongs to the RAM's ongoing program of releasing legal-tender silver coins in the original dump's approximate dimensions.
