The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank replaced its predecessor, the East Caribbean Currency Authority, in 1983 — but coinage designs and specifications had already been locked in years prior, which is why this type predates the institution that technically oversaw much of its circulation. The ECCB serves eight island territories, an unusually broad monetary union for the Caribbean, held together partly because none of the member states have ever opted to pursue independent currency issuance despite constitutional eligibility to do so.

Raphael Maklouf's second portrait of Elizabeth II, introduced across Commonwealth issues in the early 1980s, replaced Arnold Machin's effigy after nearly two decades.
