Canada's transition to Charles III coinage required the Royal Canadian Mint to retire the long-running Elizabeth II obverse after more than seven decades — the longest reign of any monarch depicted on Canadian currency. The effigy used follows the work of Canadian sculptor Steven Rosati, whose portrait was selected as the official Commonwealth standard for circulating coinage.
The 2023 issues mark the first appearance of Charles III on Canadian circulation coinage, though collector strikes in Proof and Specimen finishes appeared concurrently rather than trailing as had sometimes occurred in past reign transitions.
