Belize gained full independence from Britain in 1981, but this coin predates that by seven years — issued when the territory was still British Honduras transitioning under its new name, adopted in 1973. The Central Bank itself was established that same year, making 1974 among the first outputs of a newly configured monetary authority still assembling its institutional machinery.
The motmot series became a long-running fixture of Belizean coinage, surviving the independence transition without redesign.
