Villar de los Navarros is a small municipality in the province of Zaragoza, Aragon — a region where anarchist collectivization ran deep during the Civil War. The Colectividad Libre issued these notes as internal scrip after the local economy was effectively decoupled from the Republican peseta, with goods and labor exchanged within the collective on its own terms. Hundreds of Aragonese villages did the same, but few left paper surviving in any quantity.
The rubber stamp authentication was the only security measure available to a rural collective with no access to printing infrastructure. Counterfeiting within the village would have been socially, not legally, punished.
