Villajoyosa — a small coastal town in Alicante province — was one of hundreds of Spanish municipalities that printed their own emergency scrip during the Civil War after the Republic's coinage effectively disappeared from circulation. Copper and silver were being hoarded or melted, and the central government could not supply small change fast enough to keep local commerce moving. Municipal councils stepped in with whatever printing resources they had.
The Gari Mon reference places this among the better-documented provincial emissions, though survival rates for these local issues vary sharply depending on how long the issuing municipality remained under Republican control.
