Villafranca del Cid — now officially Vilafranca, in the Valencian Community — issued its own fractional emergency currency during the Civil War when the Republic's central supply of small-denomination coinage effectively collapsed. Municipal councils across loyalist Spain were authorized, informally or by local decree, to fill the void.
