25 Céntimos Villacañas

Villacañas is a market town in Toledo province, and like hundreds of Spanish municipalities during the Civil War, its local council issued emergency fractional currency when metallic coin disappeared almost entirely from circulation in 1936–37. The Consejo de Administración stepped in as issuing authority — a civilian administrative body, not a bank — a common arrangement in Republican-held territory where no banking infrastructure existed to fill the gap.

The Gari Monjó catalog documents these local issues exhaustively, and the 1593-A reference places this squarely among the thousands of hastily produced municipal notes that were printed, circulated briefly, and redeemed — or simply abandoned — as the war's fortunes shifted.
