Opmerkingen

Vilaplana is a small municipality in the Baix Camp comarca of Tarragona, and like hundreds of Spanish towns, it issued its own emergency paper currency during the Civil War after the Republican government's 1936 decree authorizing local bodies to produce small-denomination scrip to address the acute shortage of coin. The Turró catalog documents thousands of these emissions, most produced with minimal resources — rubber stamps, local printing shops, whatever card stock was at hand.

The thick card construction is typical of municipalities that lacked access to proper banknote paper and improvised accordingly. Survivorship is uneven: some issues were produced in tiny quantities, others destroyed en masse at the war's end.
