Vilanova de Prades is a small municipality in the Conca de Barberà comarca of Tarragona, and this 25 céntimos note is one of the thousands of locally issued emergency fractional pieces that flooded Catalonia during the Spanish Civil War after the 1936 Republican decree authorizing municipalities to print their own small-denomination currency to address the catastrophic coin shortage. Imprenta Mestres in nearby Montblanc served several of these small Conca de Barberà councils, which is why the print quality across issues from this cluster tends to be consistent even when the issuing populations numbered only in the hundreds.

The official stamp is the sole security feature — typical of the humbler rural issues in the Turró catalog.
