Vallfogona de Riucorb is a small municipality in the Conca de Barberà comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of similarly minor towns during the Spanish Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency in 1937 when coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply absent. The Republican government's inability to supply adequate small change pushed this responsibility down to the municipal level, producing what Spanish collectors call "moneda local" or "paper de guerra."

Imprenta A. Figueres in Tàrrega handled a significant number of these local issues across the Urgell and Conca de Barberà regions, which lends this note a degree of typographical consistency with neighboring issues — useful for authentication purposes.
