Totana is a small municipality in Murcia, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, its ayuntamiento issued fractional paper currency to address the near-total disappearance of metallic coinage from circulation. Republican Spain's centimo coins were hoarded, melted, or simply lost to the chaos of 1936–37, leaving local governments to improvise. These emergency issues — broadly catalogued under the "billetes locales" phenomenon — were authorised under increasingly loose provincial and national guidelines, and their quality, backing, and redemption prospects varied enormously from one town to the next.
Gari Mon 1479-A distinguishes at least one variety for Totana at this denomination, suggesting multiple print runs or typographic variants exist. Survival rates for small Murcian municipal issues tend to be low — not because of heavy use, but because most were redeemed or destroyed when the war's outcome made them worthless.
