Tornabous is a small municipality in the Urgell comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of similarly sized towns, it resorted to printing its own emergency fractional currency during the early months of the Civil War after Republican authorities requisitioned metallic coin for the war effort. The resulting vacuum in small-change supply was filled locally — often chaotically — by ajuntaments, cooperatives, and trade unions acting independently.
The Turró catalogue documents over 2,000 such Catalan municipal issues from this period. That this note carries number 2521 places it among the more obscure examples, from a town whose total population in 1936 barely reached several hundred.
