Opmerkingen

Sorbas is a small municipality in Almería, perched above a gypsum karst landscape about 40 kilometres inland. During the Spanish Civil War, Republican-controlled towns across Spain issued their own emergency fractional currency — *vales* and *cartones* — to compensate for the catastrophic disappearance of metal coinage from circulation. Silver and copper were hoarded, melted, or simply stopped moving the moment the war began in July 1936.

Imp. Haro in Vera printed for several Almerian municipalities during this period, which accounts for a shared aesthetic across local issues from the province. Sorbas itself had a population of only a few thousand, so total print runs for these municipal emissions were correspondingly small.
