Santa Cruz de los Cáñamos is a small municipality in the province of Ciudad Real, Castilla-La Mancha. This 25 céntimos note belongs to the wave of emergency fractional currency — known as cartones or billetes locales — issued by Spanish municipal councils during the Civil War after metallic coinage vanished from everyday commerce almost entirely by late 1936. Hundreds of ayuntamientos and consejos municipales across Republican-held territory issued their own scrip out of necessity, with no central authorization and wildly varying quality.
