Santa Cruz de los Cáñamos is a small municipality in the province of Ciudad Real, Castilla-La Mancha. This 25 céntimos note belongs to the wave of emergency fractional currency — known as cartones or billetes locales — issued by Spanish municipal councils during the Civil War after metallic coinage vanished from everyday commerce almost entirely by late 1936. Hundreds of ayuntamientos and consejos municipales across Republican-held territory issued their own scrip out of necessity, with no central authorization and wildly varying quality.
The Gari Molist reference number is unassigned, which typically indicates the note was catalogued but not fully classified, or that documentation remains incomplete.
