One of thousands of emergency fractional notes issued by Spanish municipalities during the Civil War, when the Republican zone experienced a near-total collapse of small-denomination coinage. The national government had neither the capacity nor the coordination to supply local change, so individual town councils printed their own — legally dubious, practically unavoidable.
The printer's imprint "Control U.G.T." identifies oversight by the Unión General de Trabajadores, the socialist trade union that exercised considerable authority over commercial enterprises in Republican-held territory by 1937. Rojales is a small agricultural settlement in the Vega Baja del Segura; that a village of this size was issuing its own currency speaks to how thoroughly the monetary infrastructure had fractured.
