Riola is a small agricultural municipality in the Ribera Baixa comarca, south of Valencia. During the Spanish Civil War, dozens of Valencian municipalities — Riola among them — issued their own fractional paper notes to address the near-total disappearance of metallic coinage from circulation after 1936. The Republican government repeatedly promised centralized small-change solutions; in practice, local councils filled the gap themselves, often printing on whatever stock was available.
The Gari Montaner reference remains unassigned, which typically indicates the compiler was aware of the issue but lacked a confirmed specimen to catalog fully at time of publication.
