Ribarroja — now Riba-roja de Túria, in Valencia — was one of hundreds of Spanish municipalities that issued emergency fractional scrip during the Civil War after the Republic's small coin supply effectively collapsed in 1936. Hoarding, fear, and the disruption of normal banking stripped the ordinary peseta coinage from circulation almost overnight, forcing local councils to fill the gap with whatever they could print.
Municipal emissions at this scale were often produced in tiny runs by local print shops, which accounts for the significant variation in paper quality and impression consistency collectors encounter across the Turró catalogue. The Gari and Turró references both document this piece, a useful cross-check given how many provincial emissions remain poorly documented in only one source.
