25 Centimos Querol; Sindicat Agrícol i Caixa de Crèdit

Querol is a municipality in the Alt Camp comarca of Tarragona province, and this note is one of thousands of locally issued emergency fractional currencies that proliferated across Republican-held Catalonia after the July 1936 uprising disrupted normal coin supply. The agricultural cooperative and credit union — the Sindicat Agrícol i Caixa de Crèdit — filled the gap left when metallic small change disappeared almost overnight, hoarded or melted down in the chaos.

The Generalitat eventually attempted to rationalize this flood of local paper, but enforcement was uneven, and many village-level issues like this one circulated well into 1937 and beyond their intended scope.
