Opmerkingen

Puente de Génave is a small municipality in the Sierra de Segura, Jaén province, and this 25 céntimos note is one of thousands of local emergency emissions produced across Republican-controlled Spain during the Civil War after the July 1936 military uprising froze conventional coin circulation almost overnight. With silver and copper hoarded or simply absent, municipalities down to village level were authorized — loosely — to print their own fractional scrip to keep local commerce moving.

The Gari Monerris catalogue documents well over a thousand such emissions from Andalusia alone. That this one survives at all is notable given the format: at 61 × 41 mm, pieces this small were handled constantly and discarded once the crisis passed.
