Pueblanueva is a small municipality in Toledo province, and like hundreds of similar towns across Republican-held Spain, it issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Civil War to compensate for the acute shortage of small coin. The central government had effectively lost control of the coinage supply by 1937, and local ayuntamientos stepped into the vacuum with handstamped or printed paper chits of wildly varying quality.
