Puebla del Duc is a small municipality in Valencia's Vall d'Albaida comarca, and like hundreds of other Republican-controlled towns during the Civil War, its council issued fractional emergency currency in 1937 to compensate for the near-total disappearance of metal coinage from circulation. The Republican government had sanctioned this municipal papel moneda practice, though the results were predictably chaotic — denominations, formats, and issuing authorities varied wildly from one village to the next.
Survival rates for these local Valencian issues are highly uneven. Small-run municipal notes from obscure councils were often discarded after the Nationalist victory, making even circulated survivors genuinely uncommon.
