One of hundreds of small-denomination emergency notes — els bitllets de necessitat — issued by Catalan municipalities during the Civil War after the Republic's metallic coinage effectively vanished from circulation, hoarded or melted down within months of the July 1936 uprising. The Ajuntament de Premià de Mar, a coastal town just north of Barcelona, authorized this 25 céntimos note through purely local necessity rather than any coordinated monetary policy.
Imprenta El Secretariat Català handled a significant volume of these municipal issues out of Barcelona, which accounts for the relatively clean typography compared to notes produced by smaller provincial printers improvising with whatever equipment was available.
