Ponts is a small municipality in the Noguera comarca of Lleida, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish towns, it issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Civil War after the Republican government's decree of 1936 effectively legitimized local money production in the face of a catastrophic coin shortage. These municipal emissions — collectively known as moneda local or paper de guerra — varied wildly in quality and execution, from professionally lithographed pieces to hand-stamped cardboard.
The Turró catalogue remains the definitive reference for this material, and low Turró numbers generally correspond to better-documented issues; 1960 places Ponts toward the mid-to-late range of catalogued municipalities, suggesting modest surviving populations.
