Poble del Llierca is a tiny municipality in the Garrotxa comarca of Girona, and like hundreds of Catalan towns during the Civil War, it issued its own fractional currency when the Republic's small change essentially disappeared from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply swept away by the monetary chaos of 1936–37. These local emergency notes, collectively known as "moneda local de necessitat," were authorized under a July 1936 Generalitat decree that gave municipalities the right to issue their own scrip up to defined limits.
Imprenta C. Barnés in Palamós handled printing for several small-run Girona-province issues during this period. Given the population of Poble del Llierca, surviving quantities were almost certainly small to begin with.
