El Pinell de Brai is a small wine-producing municipality in the Terra Alta comarca of Tarragona, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish Republican-controlled towns in 1937, it issued its own fractional emergency currency when the Civil War severed reliable coin supply from the central government. These local *moneda municipal* issues were technically sanctioned under a decree from the Generalitat de Catalunya, but in practice the designs, materials, and print quality varied wildly from one town to the next.

Imprenta Josep Bassa in Mora d'Ebre handled a number of these small-run municipal issues for Terra Alta communities — a regional printer pressed into an unusual monetary role. The thick card stock was a practical choice when proper banknote paper was unavailable, though it wore poorly in daily use.
