Olvan is a tiny municipality in the Berguedà comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of similar villages during the Spanish Civil War, it issued its own fractional emergency currency in 1937 when Republican-zone coinage effectively disappeared from circulation. The central Republican government had lost practical control over the monetary supply at the local level, forcing ajuntaments down to the village scale to paper over the gap themselves.

Imprenta Avant in Barcelona handled production for numerous municipal issues of this type, which is why notes from otherwise unrelated Catalan towns sometimes share typographic conventions.
