Navarcles is a small municipality in the Bages comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of similar towns during the Civil War, it issued its own fractional currency in 1937 to address the acute shortage of coins — Republican silver and copper had been hoarded, melted down, or simply vanished from circulation within months of the July 1936 uprising. The Generalitat de Catalunya had authorized local emergency issues, which is why so many Catalan ajuntaments produced notes through Barcelona printers during this period.
El Secretariat Català handled a substantial number of these municipal commissions. The Turró catalog remains the essential reference for this material, documenting over two thousand distinct local issues from the Republican zone.
