Moratalla is a small municipality in the mountains of Murcia, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, its local government issued its own emergency paper money when Republican-zone coinage effectively vanished from circulation. The Republican decree of late 1936 authorizing municipal emergency currency opened the floodgates — by 1937 the volume of local issues had become nearly unmanageable, with quality and backing varying wildly from town to town.
Gari Mon 973-A places this within a well-documented but genuinely obscure regional series. Survival rates for small Murcian municipal issues are unpredictable; many printings were tiny, but destruction was equally haphazard.
