Móra d'Ebre was one of hundreds of Catalan and Aragonese municipalities that issued its own emergency scrip after the July 1936 anarchist rising effectively collapsed normal banking in the region. The C.N.T.-A.I.T. collectives that took over local production and distribution needed a medium of exchange that functioned only within their own economy — these notes were deliberately non-transferable outside the collective, which is precisely why so many were destroyed or simply stopped circulating the moment the Republican government began reasserting monetary control in 1937.
Gráficas Launes was a small Barcelona printer responsible for a number of collective issues from this period. The stamp constitutes the primary security device — a vulnerability that mattered little given how tightly controlled the circulation area was.
