One of hundreds of local emergency issues produced across Catalonia during the Civil War, when the collapse of small-denomination coinage left municipalities scrambling to keep daily commerce functional. Montcada i Reixac, a small industrial town on the Besòs north of Barcelona, issued its own paper fractional currency under the authority of its Republican ajuntament — a pattern repeated in nearly every Catalan town and village between 1936 and 1938.
Turró's catalog documents over 1,500 such emissions. The sheer number of issuing bodies means condition and surviving quantities vary wildly even within a single municipality's series.
