25 Céntimos Monóvar

Monóvar is a small wine-producing municipality in Alicante province, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War it issued its own fractional paper currency when Republican authorities requisitioned metallic coin for the war effort. The Consejo Municipal — the locally controlled council — had no printing infrastructure worth speaking of, and most of these small-denomination emergency notes were produced with whatever commercial printing resources existed in the immediate area.

Survival rates for Monóvar's municipal issues are low. Small-denomination notes of this type were consumed in daily transactions and rarely set aside.
