Moneva is a village in Aragon with a population that barely reached three hundred in the 1930s. That a municipal council of this size issued its own fractional currency in 1937 speaks directly to the collapse of small-denomination coinage across Republican Spain during the Civil War — silver and copper had vanished from circulation, hoarded or melted, and thousands of local authorities filled the gap with their own paper.
Seix i Barral, better known as a literary publisher, took on emergency currency printing work during this period. The official stamp served as the primary authentication measure — without it, notes were considered unissued.
