The Comunidad de Obreros Mineros de Mazarrón — the mining workers' community of Mazarrón — issued emergency fractional notes during the early months of the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican zone faced an acute shortage of small-denomination coinage. Silver had vanished from circulation almost immediately after July 1936, hoarded or melted, and local labor organizations, municipalities, and cooperatives filled the gap with improvised paper scrip. The handstamp served as the primary authentication, a common necessity when printing infrastructure was rudimentary.

Mazarrón's mines — principally lead and zinc — were a genuine strategic resource, and the workers' community held real economic weight in the town.
