One of hundreds of small-denomination emergency notes issued by Catalan municipalities during the Civil War, when the Republican government's inability to maintain adequate coin supply pushed local councils — ajuntaments — to print their own fractional currency. Maçanet de la Selva is a small town in the Selva comarca of Girona province, and its emission was modest in scope, produced locally with the limited printing resources available.
Turró's catalog documents these wartime municipals exhaustively; #1391 places this note squarely within the 1937 peak of the phenomenon, when nearly every Catalan town of any size had issued something similar.
