Linyola is a small municipality in the Pla d'Urgell comarca of Catalonia, and this note is one of thousands of emergency fractional issues produced by Spanish local authorities during the Civil War years of 1936–1939. The collapse of small-denomination metallic coinage in Republican-held territory forced even tiny villages to print their own currency — Linyola's population at the time was well under two thousand.
Turró catalogues these municipal issues exhaustively; #1309 places Linyola firmly within the dense cluster of Lleida province emissions. The thick card stock construction was deliberate — thin paper deteriorated too quickly in daily hand-to-hand use at market stalls and cooperatives.
