Opmerkingen

La Fatarella is a small village in the Terra Alta comarca of Tarragona, deep in Republican-held Catalonia. Like hundreds of Catalan and Aragonese municipalities in 1937, it issued its own emergency small change after metallic coin essentially vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply absent in a warring economy. These hyper-local municipal emissions were technically illegal under Republican monetary law but were tolerated out of necessity.

Tipografia El Secretariat Català in Barcelona printed for dozens of these tiny councils simultaneously, which is why the production quality is often more consistent than the issuing authority's size would suggest.
