Herencia is a small municipality in the province of Ciudad Real, Castilla-La Mancha. During the Spanish Civil War, the near-total disappearance of metallic coinage from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply lost in the chaos — forced hundreds of Republican-controlled municipalities to print their own fractional paper to keep local commerce functioning.
