Herencia is a small municipality in the province of Ciudad Real, Castilla-La Mancha. During the Spanish Civil War, the near-total disappearance of metallic coinage from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply lost in the chaos — forced hundreds of Republican-controlled municipalities to print their own fractional paper to keep local commerce functioning. These emergency emissions, known broadly as "papel moneda local," were almost entirely a phenomenon of 1936–1938, and Herencia's issues fall squarely within that wave.

The Gari Monovar catalogue remains the essential reference for Spanish local Civil War issues, and the -C suffix here indicates a distinct variety within the Herencia 25 céntimos series — likely a color, paper, or typographic variant rather than a separate emission date.
