Granyena de les Garrigues is a small municipality in the Lleida province of Catalonia, and this 25 céntimos note is one of the thousands of emergency local issues produced during the Spanish Civil War after the collapse of normal coin supply. The Republican government's inability to maintain small-denomination metallic currency in circulation forced town councils — ajuntaments — across Catalonia to print their own paper fractional money, technically illegal under Spanish monetary law but tolerated out of sheer necessity.

Turró catalogues over 1,400 such municipal issues from Catalonia alone. That density of coverage makes individual attribution possible; without it, notes from smaller municipalities like this one would be nearly unidentifiable.
