Gata de Gorgos is a small municipality in Alicante province, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, its local council was forced to issue emergency fractional currency when coinage effectively disappeared from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply absorbed by wartime disruption. These municipal "guerra civil" emissions were typically authorized under Republican decree and produced with whatever printing resources the locality could access, which is why the quality varies so dramatically from one town to the next.
At under 60mm wide, this is among the smallest format issues in the entire Valencian regional series. The Gari Monedas catalog remains the primary reference for these Spanish local wartime emissions.
