Fuentespalda is a small village in the Matarraña comarca of Tarragona, well behind the Aragón front during the Civil War. Like hundreds of other Catalan and Aragonese municipalities in 1937, its local council issued fractional paper currency to address the acute shortage of small change — silver and copper had largely vanished from circulation, hoarded or melted down in the chaos following July 1936.

These municipal emissions were technically illegal under Republican monetary law but were tolerated out of necessity. The official stamp serves as the council's sole authentication mechanism, which makes unstamped examples — whether printer's remainders or notes that missed the stamping stage — essentially worthless as legal tender, though they exist.
